Head projecting, relatively long, with short horns; large triangular "wings" (pectoral fin flaps) that are strongly curved backwards; tail relatively short ( less than half disc width), scaly, without spine; skin smooth; mouth on underside of head; front margin of pectoral fin ends below and before spiracle; a short keel above spiracle; teeth on both jaws, relatively large and tassellated.
Back brown to olivaceous green, underside white at front and abruptly grey posteriorly.
Grows to a disc width of at least 370 cm and a weight of 350 Kg.
Habitat: pelagic coastal waters.
Depth: to 30 m.
Circumtropical; SW Gulf of California to Peru, the Revillagigedos and Cocos island.
